Music Writing & Lyric Writing
Music Writing Immersion
Prerequisite: 12 years and older with intermediate instrument experience
This course offers a creative atmosphere for songwriters of all backgrounds and any instrument to strengthen their writing skills and enhance their creative expression. Students learn to become intentional in every phase of their writing by creating the foundational elements of a song with the development of progressions, riffs and rhythms. Through this process, they learn to capture the emotions they want to convey and how to create contrasting sections and ideas that complement their writing style and ideas. Based on experience, some students learn to layer in melodic and harmonic compositions for instrument and vocal leads. More advanced students use scales to craft their own solo sections.
Note to Musicians: As an immersion course, students begin writing on day one and develop ideas throughout the course. This is NOT a class to learn an instrument! Help is provided, when necessary, but students should have previous experience and come expecting to perform their ideas during class with little help.
Lyric Writing Immersion
Prerequisite: 12 years and older with intermediate vocal and/or instrument experience
Song Writing helps students learn the basic methods behind writing original music. This course has two main focuses. The first is to help lyricists write clearly and powerfully from their own unique perspective. Students learn to create and command their writing, enrich their ideas, and write better lyrics through the study of various music and other creative writing. The second focus of the course is to teach students how to make the most of all the heartfelt work they pour into their writing by combing them precisely and effectively with melody that captures the intended feel and emotion. The end goal is to help students communicate their ideas in more compelling and original ways that are meaningful to them and that reach their intended audience.
Note to Singers: As an immersion course, students begin writing on day one and develop ideas throughout the course. This is NOT a vocal course! Help is provided, when necessary, but students should have previous experience and come expecting to sing their ideas during class with little help.

Note to Non–Singers: Many songwriters are not singers; therefore, vocals are not mandatory for this course. Instead, students simply write the words then use an instrument to write their melodies. Students need enough experience on their instrument to pick out notes, runs or scales. Alternatively, piano apps and other music–based apps can serve the same purpose.
